Dave is active in the local community. He has participated in a number of public processes focused on growth management issues, transportation, and the impact on the community. He is a past member of the City of Vancouver Planning Commission. He is a member of the board of directors of Quad Inc, an organization that provides affordable, wheelchair accessible housing and independent living opportunities for people with severe physical disabilities. He supports local disability sports activities through membership in the Oregon Paralyzed Veterans of America (OPVA), Oregon Disability Sports (ODS) and the Portland Pounders Wheelchair Rugby Team.
Dave worked with several other HP employees to co-found a regional collaborative effort between business and the K-12 community focused on expanding and extending effective science and math focused teaching methods or best practices and the use of a 10-district cooperative that provides "hands-on inquiry-based" science kits to approximately 25,000 K-6 students. Dave co-sponsored a two year effort that placed an engineer in a local high school math and science "magnet" program in an effort to improve the connection for students to the "real world" applications of math and science learning. Dave has provided "hands-on" projects for mechanical engineering students at the local campus of Washington State University (WSU-V) as a way to create a business link to the curriculum, expand their learning, and provide HP with alternative design ideas and insights. Dave combines all of this experience to explore with others the qualities, traits, and skills that employers value and that have helped him be successful in a technical field. Dave received his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Portland. Though physically disabled he enjoys photography, the outdoors, and wheelchair sports. He and his wife, Rachel, live in Vancouver Washington and have one daughter in college and a son in high school. |
