The RASEM2 Squared overall goal is to increase the numbers of students with disabilities who enter and choose courses and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

RASEM2

  • Is funded by the National Science Foundation for 5 years.
  • Covers all of New Mexico and far west Texas including the Panhandle to the Rio Grande and east to the Pecos River.
  • Is administered from the NMSU College of Engineering by Associate Dean William C. McCarthy and Associate Director and Co-Principal Investigator, Ed Misquez.
  • Can be found on the web at http://rasem.nmsu.edu .
  • Is composed of 52 partners including (for a complete list, go to the webpage and click on “Partners”):
    • eighteen 2-year colleges (one in Texas - EL Paso CC);
    • eight 4-year colleges (two in texas, UTEP and West Texas A & M);
    • twelve school district regional centers (two in Texas - Region 19 and 18 Educational Service Centers);
    • two national labs, including Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory; and
    • twelve educational, service provider, and state government agencies and institutions.
  • Provides mentorships and stipends to qualified graduate/under-graduate students with disabilities majoring in STEM .
  • Students must be enrolled fulltime at one of our partner institutions.
  • Provides funding for RASEM2 partners to conduct activities involving students with disabilities in science related projects.
  • Provides funding for teacher science related projects at K-12 schools with students with disabilities. Requests For Proposals (RFP) are available on request.
  • Provides $1,000 research grants to researchers hiring a student with a disability on their project for the first time

What is a disability?
Generally a disability is any condition that inhibits a life function such as walking, breathing, seeing, hearing, and learning.

Since your program is for students with disabilities, how do they qualify for your program?
Students who qualify to receive services from the campus Services for Students with Disabilities office or who are receiving serviced form the state Division of Vocational rehabilitation.

Do all disabilities qualify?
Yes, including psychological, as well as hearing impaired,, visually impaired, mobility impaired, and learning disabilities, such as dyslexia as long as they can be certified by a qualified diagnostician.

What is the Recruitment process at RASEM2?
The primary Recruiter for RASEM2 is Richard Turietta . He travels the entire region searching for college students for the Mentor/Mentee program, conducts workshops for Teacher Outreach Program (TOP) and provides funding on a compeditive basis for TOP and University partner projects.
